TOPIC: Versal forms drawn using copper point
We're going back into writing history to explore an alternative mark making method: metal point. Used heavily during the Renaissance by some of the great artists of the time *cough* Leo *cough*, a metal stylus was used to sketch fine details onto prepared surfaces.
In our meeting we will be using copper stylus's, known as copper point, to draw constructed letterforms known as versals.
For those able to attend in-person, we'll have supplies to try this out during our meeting, but those attending digitally will still get to go through the versals structures, with the more modern graphite point or other tool of their choosing at home.
SUPPLY LIST:
Since metal point requires a slightly abrasive surface, we'll be preparing those in advance but bring the tools you already enjoy working with—nothing fancy required. A basic kit is perfect, we will have a prompt at the start of meetings that members can work on through announcements and sharing is always welcome.

This year, The Annual Conference is August 3 – 8, 2026, in Salt Lake City. It is open to all IAMPETH members and offers calligraphy classes from a slate of top instructors. It is open to beginners and experienced calligraphers. Most of the classes are for calligraphers of any experience.
The conference fee is $325 and includes all classes for the week (hotel and transportation is additional). If you are interested in attending, all of the official registration information can be found on IAMPETH’s website
Already, there are several Inkspots members who are committed to going this year. There may be carpool, or other travel sharing options, to make the trip easier. Members who have gone to Annual Conference in the past, say it is a lot of fun and a great way to take a lot of classes.
